RESUME La structure interne du verbe kabɩyɛ devient complexe lorsqu'il s'agit d'effectuer sa morphologie de temps-aspect-mode (TAM) qui confère au verbe une grand variété d'affixes. Another finding is that there are three positional clitics in the language, that is, proclitics, mesoclitics and enclitics, whose climbing and doubling phenomena have an important semantic influence. The results show that affixes and clitics are different because the former are intrinsically linked to the verb whereas the latter just lean to it but with well-defined semantic functions. The data are gathered from documentary sources as well as from native Kabɩyɛ speakers, and analyzed in the perspectives of descriptive and segmentation methods. To clear away that confusion, this study has been carried out on the basis of two theories: dependency grammar and clitic movement theory. It comes out that both the affixes and clitics depend on verbs and are therefore open to misinterpretation. It becomes much more complicated at the level of morphosyntax where the verb appears in larger lingistic units (phrases, clauses or sentences) and interacts with some particular lexical units (clitics) which attach to it and thus depend on it. The internal structure of Kabɩyɛ verb becomes complex when it comes to realize its time-aspect-mood (TAM) morphology which bestows a wide range of affixes on the verb. These findings prove that the term “irregular and regular” is not fully appropriate to classify the verbs. I also found that the morphophonemic changes in the irregular verbs are influenced by the syllable number, the positions, and the environments of the peak sounds. The result of the analysis shows that there are four additional sounds added to the ’regular’ verbs such as, ,, and. I analyzed the data using distributional method. The data were collected using observation with note taking technique.
This paper is descriptive qualitative research. This research is aimed to figure out whether there are morphophonemic inflectional patterns for irregular verbs. Simply, the regular verbs are those whose changes can be morphophonemically predicted while irregular verbs are the ones whose changes are morphophonemically unpredictable. The verbs of this kind are categorized as irregular’ verbs. The second marker is the verb morphophonemic change like the word ‘sing’ and ‘sang’. All verbs with this marker are categorized as regular verbs. The first marker is the additional morpheme or. There are two inflectional markers that become the categorization of these verbs.
